Project: Teaching the Arabic Alphabet to Lower Secondary Heritage and Non-heritage Learners in
Italy; Grant No: FALL24-RP-2440334473; Qatar Foundation International;
Project Coordinator:Stefania Bertonati
The research concerns a non curricular course of Arabic addressed to a mixed group of pupils
(Arabic heritage learners and non-native speakers) attending the first year of the lower secondary
school at the Istituto comprensivo di Garlasco (Pavia).
During the course, which consists of 20 hours of teaching (February-May 2025), new teaching
material will be tested, for which publication in booklet form is foreseen, and it could represent a
reference for Arabic teaching in lower secondary schools, considering the lack of educational
material in Italian for teaching Arabic to minors. Particular attention will be given to the aspects of
learning Arabic phonetics, both in production and perception, with a longitudinal data collection.
Aim of the course is also to enhance the awareness of cultural diversity among pupils and make
them conscious about their exposure to a multilingual environment in schools and how this
represents a benefit for their cultural growth and for the practice of intercultural dialogue.
The research will take in consideration the outcomes of the course concerning writing and basic
reading skills (written and aural pupils'outputs), and compare how different groups of learners
(Arabic heritage learners and non-native speakers) learn letters and sounds.
