International Winter School | Entangled Food Histories. How to Study Food in Archaeology and History. 4-5 December 2023.

Il tema
Tanto la storia del cibo e dell’alimentazione quanto le questioni legate alla food
security ci permettono di studiare le società passate e presenti sotto un profilo
economico, politico, culturale, sociale. Per questo, in anni recenti questi filoni di
indagine hanno trovato un notevole sviluppo in ambito accademico internazionale.
In virtù di ciò, le studentesse e gli studenti che si approcciano a tali argomenti
possono sentirsi disorientati: si può studiare un determinato cibo, la sua
circolazione, il suo utilizzo, i modi in cui si cucina, ma anche gli utensili, i materiali
con cui sono stati prodotti, passando agli effetti economici nel medio-lungo
termine, per non parlare delle scelte a livello di comunità nel prediligere certi tipi di
alimenti al posto di altri, e così via.
Data la molteplicità di opzioni, non è sempre chiaro da dove iniziare né quali
strumenti si hanno a disposizione: quali sono le fonti e i metodi da impiegare? Quali
gli approcci più innovativi e le aree di ricerca in espansione al momento?

Semplicemente: come ci si può avvicinare a questo affascinante ambito di
indagine, mantenendo il rigore scientifico?
La seconda edizione di Entangled Food Histories: How to Study Food in Archaeology
and History cercherà di rispondere a queste domande.
 

A chi è rivolto?
La Winter school è rivolta sia a studentesse e studenti di corsi di laurea triennale e
magistrale relative all’archeologia, storia e scienze politiche, sia a dottorande/i o
ricercatrici e ricercatori interessati alle culture dell’alimentazione in una prospettiva
storica.

Relatori
Parteciperanno sia studiose/i di università e istituti di ricerca e tutela italiani,
europei ed extraeuropei. Il programma è scaricabile in fondo alla pagina.

Didattica
Le lezioni si terranno in lingua inglese presso l’Aula del Centro Ricerca e Didattica
Universitaria (Collegio Ghislieri). La partecipazione in modalità online è disponibile
su richiesta motivata.

The topic
Both the history of food and nutrition and issues related to food security allow us to
study past and present societies from economic, political, cultural, and social
perspectives. Therefore, in recent years these strands of inquiry have found
considerable development in international academia.
For this reason, students approaching such topics may feel confused: one can
study a particular food, its circulation, its use, the ways in which it is cooked, but
also the utensils, the materials from which they were produced, moving on the
economic effects in the medium to long term, not to mention the choices at the
level of communities in preferring certain types of foods over others, and so on.

Given the multiplicity of options, it is not always clear where to start or what tools
one has at one’s disposal: what are the sources and what methods to employ?
What are the most innovative approaches and expanding areas of research at the
moment? Simply: how can one approach this fascinating area of inquiry while
maintaining scientific rigor?
The second edition of Entangled Food Histories: How to Study Food in Archaeology
and History will seek to answer these questions.
The winter school will take place on December 4 and 5, 2023, in Pavia, at the Aula
del Centro Ricerca e Didattica Universitaria (CRDU) of Collegio Ghislieri.
 

Participants
We welcome students enrolled in Bachelor's and Master's degrees from
Departments of Social and Political Sciences and Humanities, as well as PhD
students and researchers interested in food cultures from a historical perspective.
 

Speakers
Lessons will be held by scholars from Italian, European and extra-European
universities and research centers. The full program is attached at the bottom.
 

Teaching methods
Lectures will be held in English in the Aula del Centro Ricerca e Didattica Universitaria
(Collegio Ghislieri). Online participation is available upon reasoned request.
